When shoes are purchased for children, it is recommended that their feet are properly measured. This is helpful in determining the correct length and width of their feet, which may help to avoid potential foot problems. It is beneficial to have your child wear socks that fit correctly, in addition to observing the walking pattern. It is suggested to inspect the shoes for any unusual wear as this may be indicative of specific foot conditions. It is also important to look at the condition of the skin surrounding the nails for inflamed tissue. Many parents teach their children how to properly trim their toenails, and this may prevent ingrown toenails from developing. Please consult with a podiatrist if you would like more information about proper foot care for your children.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Dr. Mark Gagnon of Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Research has indicated the condition known as plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. The majority of patients notice the pain and discomfort is worse in the morning, and can be felt when the first steps are taken. Plantar fasciitis can occur when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed. This is the portion of tissue that is located on the sole of the foot, and its function is to connect the heel to the toes. When this condition develops, the pain may be managed when appropriate foot and calf stretches are performed. It can be caused by a variety of reasons. These can include wearing shoes that do not fit properly, and standing for extended periods of time throughout the day. Additionally, it may occur as a result of beginning a new running regime, or if there has been a significant weight gain. If you have heel pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Mark Gagnon from Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Crestwood, Orland Park, and Summit, IL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Possible Signs Of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The medical condition that is known as rheumatoid arthritis can occur from an immune system that is not functioning properly. It can attack the joints in the body, and can cause severe pain and discomfort. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this ailment can consist of swollen and stiff joints, which can cause difficulty in completing daily activities. Additional signs that patients can notice when this condition first develops can include depression, limited range of motion, and a low-grade fever. When rheumatoid arthritis is promptly treated, damage to the joints and cartilage in the feet may be diminished, and the chances of having a heart attack or stroke may be reduced. If you have a tingling feeling in your feet, it is advised that you confer with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Dr. Mark Gagnon of Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Crestwood, Orland Park, and Summit, IL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
