The Toe Stretch

There are many reasons why an individual may want to stretch their feet. For example, flexibility, mobility, and foot strength may be improved, which can make it easier to complete daily activities. There are also many different ways to stretch the feet. For example, the feet can be stretched before and after a workout. Alternatively, the feet are often stretched during yoga practice. An effective yoga stretch is known as the toe stretch. This stretch can be performed by sitting on the back of the heels with the toes stretched out horizontally on the yoga mat. If you are someone that enjoys practicing yoga, performing a toe stretch may be an easy way to incorporate foot stretches into your daily routine. If you want to learn more about toe stretching, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today, who can provide you with helpful knowledge.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Dr. Mark Gagnon from Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Treatment Options for Turf Toe Injury

Turf toe is an injury that affects the base of the big toe, which is termed the first metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint. It occurs from repeatedly overstretching that joint. This is a common injury among football or soccer players, and dancers who frequently overextend the MTP joint with the heels raised.  Turf toe is considered to be a toe sprain, and ignoring it can be detrimental to continuing your sport. Resting the toe is essential, but more serious treatment options may be required in order for the MTP joint to fully heal and activity to resume. A visit to a podiatrist may involve ultrasound or electric stimulation techniques, as well as prescribing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain. In many cases, being fitted for an orthotic shoe insert may be deemed necessary. In extreme cases, surgery is recommended to repair any tears, fractures, or other joint damage. For a proper diagnosis of your turf toe sprain, along with an appropriate treatment plan, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Flat Feet in Adults

The arch of the foot is absent in people who have flat feet. This condition is noticeable when the foot remains completely flat when standing on the floor. The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and the arch generally develops in the teenage years. Existing medical conditions, such as diabetes, muscular dystrophy, and arthritis may lead to having flat feet as an adult. Treatment may be necessary if there is pain associated with this ailment. This can consist of wearing custom-made orthotics, performing specific foot stretches, and losing weight if applicable. It is beneficial to measure the feet before purchasing new shoes, in addition to allowing enough room in the top of the shoes. It can also help to wear shoes that have a low heel and to choose shoes that are suited to the activity being performed. It is suggested to people who have flat feet that they are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer effective relief solutions.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. Mark Gagnon from Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Crestwood, Orland Park, and Summit, IL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Ankle Pain and Avulsion Fractures

The ankle is an essential part of the human foot because it can act as a shock absorber and help facilitate motion. However, the ankle can also be subject to a significant amount of pain, which can cause discomfort to patients. One reason why the ankle might be subject to pain is due to something called an avulsion fracture. An avulsion fracture is a condition that can occur when, at the ligamentous or tendinous attachment, a piece of a bone is drawn away. Avulsion fractures at the ankle can be caused by a traumatic traction, when the tendon can bear more load than the bone. If you are someone that has recently endured an avulsion fracture, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist immediately.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. Mark Gagnon from Advanced Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.
